Bernard Paul Rogan Jr. lived as full a life as any man can hope to but it came to an end in the morning hours of Wednesday, November 22. He died peacefully in his sleep amidst the comfort of home and family. Known to many as Uncle Bern, whether they were his nieces and nephews or not, he was always as active as nature would allow. If there was a sport or game, he played it. He rode his motorcycle as fast as it could take him. For as strong and capable as his body was, it was surpassed by the intellectual curiosity of his mind. There was no topic that he didn't find to be at least slightly interesting. He was a voracious reader of everything from high literature to fun genre stories. He also took in all variety of movies, shows, music, and sports, with a particular love for the blues, the Philadelphia Eagles, and Notre Dame football. He'd see things live if ever he could help it. If he couldn't be in the action himself he wanted to be as close to it as possible. In 1966 he enlisted in the United States Army, serving the nation honorably during the Vietnam War. The pride he took in his service never waned. In his retirement he showed that pride as he volunteered to work with fellow veterans at the V.A. Hospital in Wilkes-Barre. He had however, an irrepressible antiauthoritarian streak in him that would lead him to protest against the war following his return home. Perhaps the greatest thing he took from his experience in the military was his love for travel, something he would go on to instill in his sons, daughter, and granddaughter. After the war he began a long career as an electrician with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, plying his trade mainly in Northeastern Pennsylvania, though many years were also spent in New York City. His union brothers would all attest to the quality of his craft, but they would rather relive the stories of his jokes and pranks. Above all, Bernie Rogan was a funny man. He was a family man, a working man, a veteran, a guy from the neighborhood, and a guy at the bar, but any who experienced him in any of those lights can easily tell of times they were lucky enough to share in his boisterous laughter. His smile was one that made people desperate to know what the joke was. He wasn't always ready to let them know. He was a man of a kind not likely to be known again. He was preceded in death by his mother, Josephine and brother, James. He is survived by his wife, Deborah, sons, Derek and Brandon, daughter, Lindsay, granddaughter, Gretta, and sisters, Barbara, Judy, and Janet. Additionally, he leaves behind a bounty of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends so large as to truly make a life worth living. A memorial service will be held at the Yeosock Funeral Home at 40 South Main Street in Plains, PA on Saturday, December 2, 2023 from 11:00am to 1:00pm, with a celebration of Bernie's life to follow at Bettelli's Villa at 560 Kidder Street, Wilkes-Barre, PA. Friends and family members are invited to attend both.
