George I. Smith, Jr., 79, of Mountain Top, passed away Friday, August 28, 2026, at Hospice of Allied Services in Wilkes-Barre, surrounded by his loving family.

George was the oldest son of the late George I. Smith, Sr. and Doris (Hummel) Smith. He was a graduate of E.L. Meyers High School, Class of 1965, where he was a member of the football and track teams.

A proud United States Navy veteran, George later worked as a carpenter. He was employed at the power plant for more than 10 years and then spent more than 30 years with Yeagley Construction, building homes throughout the area.

George enjoyed bowling, fishing and hunting with family and friends. He was also a talented woodworker and enjoyed making projects for his home, family and friends.

In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by his son, George I. Smith III.

He is survived by his daughter, Dawn Michelle Lawson, of Wapwallopen; son, Chad Smith, of Mountain Top; brother, Gary Smith; granddaughters, Stephanie, Kiara, Erin and Coray; and great-grandsons, Merrick, Jayson, Knox and Ryder.

A memorial service will be conducted from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at Yeosock Funeral Home, 40 South Main Street, Plains Township.

Private interment will be held at Mt. Greenwood Cemetery, Trucksville, at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice at Allied Services, 200 South Meade Street, Wilkes-Barre, PA 18702.
