ohn Hallas Jr., 87, of Plains Twp., passed away Friday, Sept. 2, 2022, in Wilkes-Barre General Hospital following a short battle with cancer.
John was born in Plains Twp. in 1934 to Anna and John Hallas Sr. He lived in Plains Twp. his entire life. He married his high school sweetheart, Eleanor Petro, daughter of George and Anna Petro of Plains Twp. John and Eleanor recently celebrated their 66th anniversary together in July.
After graduating from Plains High School, John, a Korean War era Veteran, served six years in the Navy. He was an electrician and a fireman on the U.S.S. Coral Sea and the U.S.S. Roosevelt.
After discharge, John found employment at Scranton White Truck, working in the parts department. He later moved to Valley White Truck as parts manager. After several years, John was hired by Friedman's Express as Shop Foreman andService Manager. His civilian career spanned over 25 years.
John enjoyed gardening, working in the yard and decorating for the holidays. He also enjoyed picnics at Knoebels Grove and traveling to local points of interest. John enjoyed spending time with family and watching the New York Giants and Penn State's Nittany Lions.
John is survived by his wife, Eleanor Petro Hallas; their son, Michael John Hallas Sr. and wife, Gerrie, Lexington, Ind.; their daughter, Susan Davis, Tennessee; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his brother, Frank Hallas and wife, Carolyn, Johnson City, N.Y.; and sister, Shirley Jescavage and husband, Ron, Plains Twp.
Funeral will be held at 9 a.m. Thursday from Yeosock Funeral Home, 40 S. Main St., Plains Twp. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. in Ss. Peter and Paul Roman Catholic Church, 13 Hudson Road, Plains Twp. Interment will immediately follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Plains Twp. Friends may call at the funeral home for visitation/wake from 9 a.m. until time of procession.
