John Rushton, 76, passed away peacefully on October 9, 2023, surrounded by loved ones at Reading Hospital. Born on January 28, 1947, he was a pillar of strength, deeply rooted in the communities he touched throughout his lifetime.
John was a proud graduate of Edwardsville High School, Class of 1965. His commitment to service was first evidenced through his years as a police officer for Jenkins Township in the late 1970s. Reaching the rank of Corporal, John was a member of the first graduating class of Act 180 and made significant contributions to community safety.
His talents as a Journeyman machinist led him to work in various machine shops in the Wilkes-Barre, York, and Harrisburg areas. He took pride in his work ethic, culminating in his retirement from Lions Brewery in 2012. But his work didn't stop there—John also dedicated years to delivering papers for The Times Leader and serving in the Altar, kitchen or doing repairs in the rectory of St John the Baptist Orthodox Church.
John was preceeded in death by his parents, Thomas and Helen (Berdy) Rushton; sister, Mary Cunius; and his sons, twins Bryan and Christopher and Andrew Thomas; and his granddaughter, Emma.
He leaves behind a loving family, including his wife, Karen Gilligan; children, John Joseph of Reading, Amy Laurence (John) of Mount Penn, Elizabeth (Seth) of Wernersville, and Mark (Amy) of Chesapeake, VA. He is also survived by his brother, Thomas (Mary) of Coppers Cove, TX; and sisters, Alexsandra of Swoyersville, Olga of Edwardsville, and Helen of Pringle; as well as thirteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
The family invites friends and relatives to a Viewing Service at Yeosock Funeral Home, 40 S Main St, Plains, on Friday, October 13, 2023, from 4 pm to 6 pm, with a Parastas Service at 5:30 pm.
