Sandra "Sandy" J. Edwards Hunt, age 91, passed away on March 24, 2026, at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center following a sudden illness. We say "sudden" because Sandy—who survived a historic flood, decades of natural disasters — was simply not the type to linger. She had places to be, opinions to share, and grandchildren to brag about, and she remained committed to all three right up until the end.

Born in Courtdale, Sandy was the daughter of Hugh and Ruth Edwards. She graduated from Luzerne High School and went on to attend Wilkes-Barre Business College, where she acquired the organizational skills she would spend the rest of her life.

Sandy's career was nothing short of extraordinary. When Hurricane Agnes flooded the Wyoming Valley in 1972, most people waited for help to arrive—Sandy became the help. She was hired by HUD as a disaster relief worker and never really looked back. She later brought her formidable customer service skills to Enrico Bartolini Furniture Manufacturer in Exeter before returning to FEMA, where she worked well into her 70s. Over the course of her career, Sandy traveled to all 50 states and American Samoa, providing aid to thousands during the worst moments of their lives. She had an uncanny ability to walk into chaos and immediately order.

Sandy was an avid reader, a devoted member of Prince of Peace Episcopal Church in Dallas. At Prince of Peace, she served on the vestry for multiple terms beginning in 1963, chaired fundraisers, participated in the Altar Guild, and was, by all accounts, a faithful and tireless servant of God. Sandy was also a proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Wyoming Valley Chapter, and the West Side Women's Club, where she formed lifelong friendships.

Above all else, Sandy's family was her greatest joy—and her favorite subject of conversation. She was a devoted sister, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who always expressed her gratitude for her family. Her grandchildren were a particular source of pride, and she never missed an opportunity to make sure the world knew it.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph B. Hunt; her beloved partner in later years, John Fletcher; her sister, Ruthe Edwards; sister-in-laws Jeanne Edwards and Betty Jane Robins; brother-in-laws Ted Goulstone and Tom Robins; and many dear lifelong friends and cousins.

She is survived by her daughters, Sandra H. Ercolani and husband Rick of Mountain Top, and Jennifer Hunt Butow and husband John of Point Pleasant Beach, NJ; her grandchildren, Matthew J. Ercolani and wife Allyson, Regina Chapman and husband Matthew, Grace Keefe and husband Peter, and Allison Butow and fiancé Keegan Pindar; her great-grandchildren, Benjamin and Josephine; sister, Cynthia Goulstone, brother, Joseph Edwards and many nieces and nephews. Sandy cherished each of these relationships deeply—and made absolutely certain they all knew it.

She also held a special place in her heart for those she called her "bonus children": John and Suzanne Fletcher of Hanover Township; Jackie and Jim Brozena of West Pittston; and Jill and Brian Scroggs of Harleyville, SC, along with her granddaughters Lauren and Erica. That Sandy expanded the definition of family to include anyone she loved enough to claim is perhaps the most "Sandy" thing of all.

Sandra "Sandy" J. Edwards Hunt was iron-willed, sharp, warm, well-read, and utterly irreplaceable. She survived floods, disasters, and decades of life with grace, grit, and strong opinions. The world is quieter without her—though those who knew her will likely keep hearing her voice in their heads for quite some time. She would have considered that a job well done.

A memorial requiem service will be held at 12 p.m. on Saturday, April 11, 2026, at Yeosock Funeral Home, 40 S. Main Street, Plains Township, 18705, with the Reverend Daniel Shission officiating. Family and friends may call at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Inurnment will follow immediately in Evergreen Cemetery, Shavertown.
